Long on talent, but with an iffy track record of production, Jurickson Profar has another new team.
One player that has a tantalizing amount of talent but a decided lack of a track record of that talent translating reliably on the baseball field is Jurickson Profar. Profar at one point was considered to be one of the better prospects in baseball when he was in the Rangers’ organization. However, it took him several tries to actually stick in the major leagues before he put up a very decent season in 2018 which saw him slash .254/.335/.458 with 20 home runs. The Athletics snatched him up for the 2019 season which saw his numbers dip down to an 89 wRC+ thanks, in part, to a comically low .218 BABIP.
Flash forward to today and now it looks like Profar has a new team that wants to take a gamble on him.

In Profar, the Padres are getting a guy who could breakout and be another interesting bat on an increasingly more interesting Padres roster. The Padres pretty clearly are doing a lot of roster moves in order to contend soon as they have already dealt one of their top young players, Luis Urias, in a deal earlier this offseason. Profar is a risky bet, but depending on the return for Oakland (Profar being in the last year of his contract helps there), it is perhaps a worthy one.
Speaking of which, what Oakland is getting in return is still unknown. Again, Profar isn’t exactly a guy that is going to command a huge return especially for just one year of him, but one isn’t going to be able to fully evaluate this deal until all of the terms are known.
